WIFI

I should probably mention how I'm connected to the internet.
Of course, in the beginning I was connected via a modem from the phone-company crooks, but as far as quality goes, it's slow, you pay by the minute, and in the end it's quite expensive. ADSL was very expensive and still not much better. But I have companies nearby that offer internet over WiFi. One of them has pretty odd rates, a big installation fee, and the WiFi equipment still belongs to the company anyway. The other company, though, has normal rates, no installation fee, and if you buy the equipment yourself, make the antenna yourself, and set everything up yourself, then you only pay a flat monthly fee. The only catch is you have to sign up for 2 years.

WiFi is basically a normal network with a few specifics. Everything about this network is already on the internet, so I don't need to go into detail, and I'll just add my one favourite link, where there are guides on antennas, recommendations on equipment, and everything an average user is interested in, etc., even though the information there isn't up to date anymore today, the basics still hold. There were problems with the WiFi, and the provider didn't really solve it any other way either. They didn't offer me a discount or any other connection option, and moreover, even after they admitted the fault wasn't on my end, they still tried to string me along and didn't want to refund the money I'd prepaid for a service that had long since stopped working. In the end they refunded at least part of the money, but even so I paid for a period when I'd already had the internet cancelled ;-( .
Today I'm back on a phone line, this time ADSL, and since I also have a public IP address, I'm fairly satisfied. If only that line weren't so terribly asymmetric :-( .
