Philips QC 5040 shaver disassembly kit
April 20, 2012

Thanks to the fact that I wrote about the analysis the Philips 5000 series shaver, I got a broken Philips QC 5040 shaver. It looks similar to the previous one, the main difference is that it's battery operated. The razor is old, so it's no longer sold, but guessed that you can buy more or less the same one under a different brand name. According to the internet it was sold for 799 CZK for example. The part that cuts the hair is the same and therefore interchangeable with the one on the other machine.

After trying to take this razor apart, I finally took it apart as well. On first attempts it looks like it has a double wrapper, but it's actually just an additional layer. And in principle it breaks down exactly the same and is equally watertight. As you can see from the picture, dirt got inside, luckily the motor hasn't rusted yet. The principle of the machine is exactly the same as philips 5000 series.

Again, the appliance contains virtually no electronics. Apart from the switch and motor, it contains a circuit board with a few passive components and an LED to indicate the battery is charging. The last component is of course the rechargeable battery. As you can see the NiCd type, the type that is still alive. This type of battery has features that still make it make sense to use them in place of modern battery types. One can guess that there is no electronics in the plug either, so probably the battery is not being charged intelligently and thus gently.

The other problem was a broken cord, a common fault with all today's devices, but fortunately also easily repairable.

After making repairs and completely cleaning the shaver, it started working again.
The only 100% clean way to go green is by repairing appliances and using them again! Because disposing of the old and making new is just another environmental burden!
